Open letter to Parents and Club Committees
Updated: Apr 5, 2020
Dear Parent/Committee/Club Official,
We are quite clearly in uncharted waters when it comes to the current situation we find ourselves in regarding the COVID-19 outbreak, both in the UK and globally within the swimming community. Many clubs have taken the decision to close down during this period. Some remain functional at a limited level but it is unfortunately inevitable that sooner or later everyone will be forced to take some time away from the pool for an undefined period of time.
This will be a hard pill to swallow for many, athletes no longer able to train and take part in the sport they love, parents having to spend 24 hours a day with their children and coaches who devote their lives to the betterment of others. This is usually not for the financial gain it brings because often the financial gain is low and many coaches work on part time contracts. Coaches do what they do because they are excited by helping others achieve their dreams.
When the inevitable comes and your club has to close its doors for a period of time to help the fight against COVID-19, spare a thought for the team of people who coach your children. Many are self-employed, on low wage contracts and get paid by the hour. When sessions don’t run or clubs run out of money, they will not get paid.
It is true, the whole country is likely to fall on hard times financially during this period. However, could parents and committees please consider keeping in place some form of fee structure to allow coaches to receive payment so that they may sustain themselves during this period of reduced activity. It will be greatly appreciated and means that when things eventually return to normal the coaches will still be there, able to deliver the highest quality coaching your child deserves.
The coaching community 😀
